A Comfortable, Grippy Trail Shoe for Long Runs

Looking for a comfortable trail running shoe with excellent grip and a roomy toe box? In this review, I’ve been testing the Altra Experience Wild 3+ across mixed terrain, including mud, wet rock, grass, and gravel, to see how it performs in real-world conditions.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Altra Experience Wild 3+ stands out with its bright pink colourway and aggressive-looking lugs. The shoe feels lightweight, giving the impression it will handle a variety of trail conditions with ease.

The overall design strikes a balance between comfort, protection, and performance, with Altra’s signature foot-shaped fit clearly evident.

Fit: Roomy Toe Box with a Secure Feel

One of the standout features of all Altra running shoes is their foot-shaped design, and the Experience Wild 3+ is no exception.

The heel hold is generally secure, although I did notice slight forward movement on steep descents, even when using a heel-lock lacing technique. This may be worth considering if you’re between sizes.

Ride & Cushioning: Built for Long Trail Runs

The Altra Experience Wild 3+ features the Altra EGO™ P35 midsole, delivering a cushioned yet responsive ride.

There’s enough softness for comfort over longer distances, without losing that all-important connection to the trail. Combined with the spacious fit, this makes the shoe particularly well-suited to long trail runs and time on feet.

Altra also promotes a rocker shape for a more efficient toe-off. While this wasn’t especially noticeable, the shoe felt natural, light, and easy to run in from the first outing.

Grip & Traction: Excellent in Wet and Technical Conditions

The Vibram® Megagrip outsole is a real highlight.

I tested these shoes on:

  • Wet rock
  • Grass
  • Gravel
  • Streams
  • Short road sections between trails

Grip was consistently excellent, especially in wet and slippery conditions. I even ran through streams and deep puddles, and the shoes didn’t retain water or lose traction on slick surfaces.

Running canicross-style (with a dog pulling on descents), I felt confident in the grip even under added load — a good sign for technical trails.

Stability & Protection

On uneven terrain, the Experience Wild 3+ feels stable and reliable.

The integrated toe bumper provides solid protection from rocks and roots, making it a good choice for more technical trails where foot placement matters.

Durability

After multiple runs totalling several hours across mixed terrain, there are no early signs of wear on the outsole or upper. While it’s still early days, durability looks promising.
